Cynthia Eloise Starr
Mixed Media Collage Artist and Doodler
I am a mixed media collage artist born and raised in Portland, Oregon but now living across the river in Vancouver, Washington. I write a blog on www.eloisescollage.com detailing my art and creative interest, sometimes my travels and family. I also sell my art through galleries, art fairs and Etsy online.
I never consciously made a decision to be an artist; I always was from the very start. I can’t imagine a life without creativity. I need to be doing something creative as much as I can. Lately it’s my traveling doodle journal; I’m into my 3rd journal now and take it everywhere with me. I even devised a work space in my car so I could work on my postcards during my lunch break at work.
I took every art class I could in school and have continued to take classes from time to time. There are so many new materials and techniques to incorporate into my art. My idol has always been Monet, ever since I saw his Water Lily painting at the Portland Art Museum during a 5th grade class tour.
I thought I wanted to be a Commercial Artist or maybe an Interior Decorator after high school but got married and started a family. So sewing was my creative outlet for many years. I sold twelve dozen soft sculpture granny magnets to the Made In Oregon Shops one Christmas season and taught classes in soft sculpture. I quickly discovered that assembly line sewing wasn’t for me.
I started tearing paper after my divorce, and found great satisfaction in just ripping paper. I got more controlled with my tears and started weaving the pieces. Not only did the tearing excite me but the way the colors came together as I arranged them. Then I discovered handmade papers and my collages started changing. Now its buttons, beads and all kind of embellishments even paint.
I participated in a couple of juried group shows at the Columbia Tech Center in St Helens, Oregon and after moving to Vancouver showed in the Downtown Vancouver Store Front Galleries.
Recently I’ve set up a tent at a couple of Art Fairs, one in Rockaway Beach, Oregon and this last summer at the English Estate Winery Art and Wine Fair, in Vancouver.
